Open Viennese

Post  mpr9b on Wed Aug 18, 2010 12:09 pm

So I'm just wondering what people think about figures that are not in the "Viennese Syllabus". The syllabus as I name it is:
Reverse and Natural Turns
Closed Changes (Fwd and Back)
Reverse and Natural Fleckerl
Contra Check

My first question is: Is there any figure that allows you to rotate from Reverse Fleckerl to Natural Fleckerl, some form of opposite contra check. I stick by saying I've never seen one, but some of my friends say they think they have. Does anyone know if one exists (video please).

There is also the question of dancing outside of these contexts. As open dancers one is able to do any figure they want, naturally for fear of displeasing the judges. Do you consider it a break of character/tradition to dance other figures in competition?

Examples of other figures are pivots (often in canter rhythm as in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_hXyvP2BVA ~58 seconds) or a brief outside partner set (same video ~50 second mark)

Actually, Dan told me that even in open you can't break syllabus for Viennese. This made me sad since my favorite V Waltzes are Pino and Alessandra's showcases, and they do tons of cool stuff outside the syllabus figures. I know it varies by country. But, technically I think you can still get invigilated in the US for doing this even in open.

Woah. That's really cool. I'd be interested in seeing where this rule is written down. I just know I've never seen it, but never knew why I didn't see it.

In open, you can break syllabus, it's just generally considered in bad taste. Very bad taste. It would be equivalent to dancing a champ event in jeans. You wouldn't get any points for doing it. It is out of character of the dance. However, in MAC 2006, I did see Pasha Pashkov and Inna Brayer do a 6 count contra check, which I had never seen before and is technically not in syllabus. It worked beautifully. But I wouldn't venture too far past that.

Also, Calf Raises

That's more along the lines of what I was thinking, that you are permitted to do it, it is just out of the character of the dance (as seen in competition venues, to be contrasted with showdance/performance venues)
